Is AZ900 Worth It?

The breadth of Azure can be overwhelming for anyone new to the platform. Understanding how each service fits into your organization’s needs proves challenging. What services should you use? Which ones should you not?

The answer lies in understanding the fundamentals of Azure first. The Azure Fundamentals AZ900 Certificate tracks are designed to help you answer those questions and more.

The five modules below will give you a firm understanding of Azure as a whole so that you can determine which services best suit your organization’s needs.

Lets dig deeper…

AZ900 Certification

AZ900: Azure Basics

Azure is Microsoft’s offering of IaaS services. In other words, the Azure cloud is a collection of virtual machines (VMs) hosted in Microsoft data centers. Azure provides you the ability to create and deploy custom apps by using Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS).

Azure has many advantages over on-premises datacenters, including scalability, elasticity, and low costs. You can access Azure by using a web browser or a remote app. Web browsers can access Azure via the internet, but remote apps require an Azure Virtual Network (VNet) to securely connect to Azure. Azure Networks is a complex topic.

This section will give you a quick overview of the network components within Azure, so that you understand the need for VNets.

Is Az900 worth it?

Yes, if you are

  • familiar to cloud computing and trying to learn Azure
  • you are new to cloud computing and wants to proceed a career through any role based Azure certification
  • on-prem system admins or architects transitioning to cloud based role.

Fun Fact: Wondering how much does az900 cost?  $99 in the US.

Understanding Azure Platform in tracks:

Now, lets understand Azure in a nutshell. Here are the five modules or tracks to go through which will give us an overview of Azure, and why learning its fundamentals (Az900 Azure Fundamentals) benefits any one with the options given above:

Track 1 – Azure Architecture and Design

When designing your Azure solution, you must account for the complexities within Azure’s many service offerings. Designing a successful architecture requires you to understand the dependencies between Azure services so that you can select only the necessary services for your solution.

This module will help you understand the dependencies between Azure services and provide you with the knowledge necessary to create a successful Azure architecture.

Topics covered in this module include:

– Azure Architecture

– Azure Design Considerations

– Azure Service Dependencies

– Azure Service Limitations

– Azure Service Integration

– Azure Service Interoperability

Here are the three Role based Azure Certifications

Track 2 – Implementing Azure

You may have a great architectural design, but if you cannot implement it, you have failed. This module provides you with the knowledge to successfully implement your Azure architecture.

Topics covered in this module include-

– Azure Architecture Implementation

– Azure Design Implementation

– Azure Hybrid Scenario

– Azure Migration Tools and Techniques

– Azure Governance

Fun Fact: az900 is not a prerequisite for any Azure certifications. You can directly achieve any higher level Azure Certifications without getting certified for AZ-900.

Track 3 – Cloud Security

Cloud security begins with architecture design but does not stop there. You must have the knowledge to implement security controls correctly throughout your environment.

Topics covered in this module include-

– Azure Security Architecture

– Azure Security Controls

– Azure Security Best Practices

Track 4 – DevOps in Azure

In order to lower your Azure maintenance costs and increase the scalability of your application, you must implement DevOps practices in your organization. This module will help you understand how to implement DevOps in Azure so that you can reduce the effort it takes to maintain your Azure infrastructure.

Topics covered in this module include-

– Azure DevOps

– Azure Automation

– Azure Logic Apps

– Azure Functions

– Azure Service Integration

– Azure Security

Track 5 – Azure Data Services

Managing data across various cloud services is a challenge for many organizations. Azure, however, provides several data services that can help you manage your data.

Topics covered in this module include-

– Azure Data Architecture

– Azure Data Integration

– Azure Data Security

– Azure Data Storage

Final Thoughts:

az-900, the Azure Fundamental certification is worth it. Spending 85 minutes and $99 to achieve this certification is a good investment. As it gives foundational knowledge of Azure in a nutshell.

Though this certification is not a prerequisite for any associate (AZ 104, AZ 204,..) or professional level certifications (az 304, az 400), it is good to get certified for az900 Microsoft azure certification to gain the basic foundational knowledge of Azure concepts and Azure services.

Once you pass the az900 exam, you can immediately opt for associate level certifications depending on the Role (based certification) you wanted to proceed with. (Role based Certifications: Solutions Architect, Developer, SysOps).

Applying Azure knowledge you gained with AZ-900 certification within the Azure environments will keep up your momentum you just generated.
